Congratulations to all those who did well in their A levels

Congratulations to all those who achieved the results they hoped for in their A-Levels when they were announced yesterday.

Commiserations to those who did not but don't give up: there may be good options for you going forward available through clearing or another route.

Yesterday, young people across England received their exam results, with 79 per cent of 18-year-old pupils in the UK gaining a place at their first choice university, ensuring that everyone has access to a wide range of options for the future, helping us grow the economy.

  • Of course, the pandemic had a serious impact on students and that is why the government  invested £5 billion in education to help pupils recover from this. Results yesterday showed a return to pre-pandemic levels in an important step in getting back to normal.
  • Overall, 79 per cent of 18-year-old pupils in the UK gained a place at their first choice university. 16,530 students who received free school meals have also gained a place at university which is a 60 per cent increase from 2019. 90.5 per cent of T Level students also achieved a pass or above. 
  • The government will continue to support students in the return to normal and ensure that every student has access to a wide range of options for the future which will help us grow the economy.

I was very sorry to learn that Alderman John Jackson, a former councillor and Mayor of Copeland has died. (To avoid any confusion, I should probably explain that he was Mayor when this was the title of the councillor who was in the council chair that year, and who acted as the ceremonial mayor and first citizen. It was an entirely different post from the subsequent office of directly elected Mayor, who was essentially an elected leader.) John was a straightforward, no-nonsense honest and kind individual who worked hard for his constituents as a councillor and for his community in everything he did. He will be missed. Rest in Peace.

Norman Tebbit RIP

 Lord Norman Tebbit, one of Margaret Thatcher's closest allis, has died at the age of 94. He will be remembered as many things by many people, but the image which will stick in my mind was what a kind and courteous man he was when I met him. Two minute silence on Friday 15th August to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ day

 Following the VE day commemorations in May this year to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, VJ Day 80 on Friday will mark the anniversary of the final end of the war. A series of events will be held in Britain and around the world, although the USA commemorates VJ day a few days later than we do.
